Focus Your Groom Speech On The Bride
When it comes to wedding speeches, it may be difficult to assess which one is the most important. However, the groom speech can be especially important because of the message it can impart to the bride. Regardless of whether the wedding speeches are done traditionally or non-traditionally, the groom will acknowledge a number of people in his speech and offer toasts to them all. He will then turn his attention to his bride.
As the groom, this is a unique opportunity to reveal publicly how you feel. Although you are in front of family and friends, what you say isn’t for their benefit. They are merely witnesses to your message. In this part of your groom’s speech, every word is directed to your bride. At that moment you are the only two people in the universe.
For many men, opening up to their true feelings takes them so far outside of their comfort zone that they shy away from these strong emotions. You may be tempted to make jokes.
Don’t do that.
Save the humor for the best man speech, but not with the woman who is waiting to hear how much she means to you. If you make light of this, you will send the wrong message to her and to everyone else in the room, or to whomever may be watching the video in the future. Yes, it’s that important.
The secret to telling your bride how you feel is to deal with this issue before you give your groom speech, during the planning stages, such as now while you are reading this article. Keep what you say simple, honest and genuine. You don’t need to be flowery. You don’t need to use flattery. You just need to speak from your heart, even if you’re not eloquent.
Here are some suggestions.
Quote song lyrics that describe how you feel
Search online for “love song lyrics.” Keep them short, but still a complete thought — one you genuinely believe. Otherwise, no one, including your bride, will accept what you say as true.
You might begin this way: “I’m not always good at expressing how I feel, but when I hear these words, they echo what is in my heart.”
Sample Song Lyrics: “The first time ever I saw your face, I thought the sun rose in your eyes, and the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave to the dark and the endless skies, my love.” — The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, by Roberta Flack.
Quote an appropriate poem
Relate how you felt the first time you met or the moment you knew you wanted to spend your life with your new wife. Start with what led up to your realization, and end with the moment of revelation that she was “The One.”
You once thought the happiest day of your life was when she said, “Yes,” but today is even better. And you look forward to many more “happiest days” together.
With all the negative jokes you hear about marriage, perhaps you weren’t sure you ever wanted to get married. But then you two met and all doubts disappeared at the prospect of spending a lifetime with someone so beautiful, smart, and loving.
With preparation, you too can write a memorable groom speech if you take the thoughts that are in your heart and mind, put them into simple words, use someone else’s words to help you out, and tell this woman that you love her with all your heart.
